Why it’s Important to be Passionate about Your Career Choices
As a kid, I loved sports, and enjoyed the competition of being the first one to answer a complex math problem in class. These were my passions! However, upon graduation from Vanderbilt University, my career path took me in a different direction from my love of sports and math when I started a sales position with Procter and Gamble.
Everyone told me how lucky I was to get such a great job directly out of college, yet I was not happy. My sales position was bureaucratic, and I did not like building product displays on very hot days while wearing three piece suits! However, I did learn a tremendous amount about how to market consumer products successfully. To be fair, P&G treated its employees very well. I longed for independence and control and was too entrepreneurial for a large corporate setting.
I failed to recognize the passions discovered in my youth and employ them in my job. So, two years after starting my position at P&G, I quit the “ultimate perfect job” for a college grad with plans to enroll in a Master’s of Business Administration program.
I was searching for a temporary job to hold me over until my MBA program started when I noticed an ad for a retail sales position at a local sporting goods store. After working for a few months, I was selected to head up a new catalog division of licensed sporting goods.
I enjoyed the challenges of this new venture and liked watching the people I hired reach their full potential. The business experienced tremendous growth during the first few years and, as a result, I learned valuable lessons. I had finally used my passions of sports, math, and guiding other people’s professional growth to find my ideal job!
After growing that catalog company to over $100 million in sales, it was sold to a larger catalog firm, and I was in search of my next venture. I really wanted to combine my love of sports and summer camp, so I started Camp All-Star with my wife. After 16 successful years, we ultimately sold the company to a national camp firm.
I have been extremely fortunate to experience several dream jobs after starting my career with a job I disliked and want to help others experience the same satisfaction without making mistakes.
